Curatorial Rationale

My artworks aim to convey the uniqueness of nature along with the valuable bond between humans and their environment. The feeling that nature communicates to a person creates unity as it brings about peace and simplicity among people unlike other factors. Nature relieves viewers from the complexities of life and allows them to fully enjoy themselves in the present. My art functions to give the audience a chance to relive their extraordinary experiences with nature and situate them in graceful naturalistic surroundings that evokes feelings of serenity like no other.

Similar to artists such as Ferdinand Hodler, I desired to express the exact emotion that is encountered when an individual is enveloped by nature. Using color, line, and shape, I attempted to preserve the inner peace that one feels after being outdoors. Calm and cool colors, such as green and blue, were prevalent throughout almost all of my artworks, especially in “Nature’s View”. Specifically, this artwork intends to evoke a serene and harmonious mood in the audience. Additionally, “In the Distance” uses approximately three different shades of blue, symbolic of expansiveness and freedom, emphasizing nature’s serenity. The feeling of tranquility and notion of good health as well as peace of mind is expressed through the green since it symbolizes these qualities. Nature aids human beings in creating a new and more optimistic future by allowing them to learn from their past mistakes. It is known for its ability to allow humans to reflect upon their past. Furthermore, white symbolizes cleanliness and having a fresh start in life. To specify, in the work “Hello, Goodbye”, I left a great amount of space colorless so that the perception of starting new and leaving behind the rough past is conveyed.

A large portion of my pieces consisted of a sky, grass or mountains, and a body of water which are all forms found in actual nature views, aiding in creating a realistic composition throughout my portfolio. These bodies each symbolize different aspects that enhance the uniqueness of nature. The use of trees, water, and a sky in the majority of my works somewhat places the audience within all the natural elements and intends to impersonate calmness that it brings to the viewer. The use of line was also prominent because this formal quality was essential in creating a separation between these landforms and allowing the audience to clearly envision it as if they were placed in that surrounding. These structures create harmony within nature and are the reason for unity created among the living creatures that call the environment their home.

Since I live in an urban environment, natural scenery is not something that is available to me at all times. Living in New York City has made me appreciate open spaces and suburban environments far more because during the few times I visited  these sort of places, I have truly felt tranquil. This greatly impacted the creation of my works because I was unable to make art based on what I was physically viewing. In order to first have a picture of something that looks similar to a scenic view I had to combine numerous  magazines, newspapers, and images. My works mimicked these collages and collections of pictures and due to this, my art resulted in a more direct or literal representation.

Over the course of my portfolio, I transitioned from displaying direct scenes of nature, such as landscapes, to portraying the relationship between humans and nature, like a girl blowing on a dandelion. Throughout the creation of my last few works, I had limited supplies as I was unable to attend school due to the pandemic. Consequently, I was required to make use of the art materials available to me within my own house. I previously had done several works through observation of collages and images, therefore, doing more works in the same manner felt repetitive and monotonous. Instead, I proceeded to create artworks that were more representational rather than observational. As a result, the pieces gradually became less realistic and more fantastical. This superficial aspect permitted me to have my works more deeply connect with the audience and remind them of an action or situation that they were in similar to the one being portrayed in the art. Being able to compare and contrast their own experiences to those being portrayed in the artwork, I strongly want the audience to appreciate the precious bond between a human being and nature.
